Thankful we were able to experience a glimpse of God’s love in human form. Although you are no longer physically here with us, we will always celebrate you and the legacy you have left for us to protect. You have taught us so much about life and how everyday is a blessing and how we have to do better at just living in the moment. Thank you for being the best son, brother, grandson, nephew, and friend anyone could ever ask for. Thank you for bringing joy, laughter and real happiness to us each and every day. You are truly our angel. You will be missed every second of everyday and you will never be forgotten our sweet sonshine. Happy Heavenly 19th Birthday Nono. Remember don’t eat too much Oreo cake and hug Grandma for us.”

Prayer, Solidarity, and a Call for Answers

The evening of the birthday will bring together supporters at Greater St. John AME Church in Biloxi, roughly five miles from Ocean Springs, for a national prayer rally held in Nolan’s memory. Dr. Jamal Bryant, senior pastor of New Birth Missionary Baptist Church in Georgia, was scheduled to deliver the keynote. On social media, he framed the gathering in martial spiritual terms.

Ben Crump, civil rights attorney and counsel to the Wells family, used a separate news conference to press the same theme: unity on the birthday, directed toward truth.

What Happened on July 4

The sequence of events on Independence Day remains under investigation. Nolan and a group of friends departed Ocean Springs by boat for Horn Island, a small community in the Mississippi Sound where thousands gather each year for the holiday. After the outing, the friends made their way back — Nolan did not.

According to Tyler Cox and Edward Paltzik, attorneys representing the friends, roughly an hour after Nolan was last seen, one of the boats experienced a bilge pump failure. Water began filling the hull quickly. The young men placed an emergency call requesting a tow and turned their attention to managing the sinking vessel and getting everyone off the island.

Cox pushed back against the narrative that his clients simply abandoned Nolan on the shore.

“That’s just how it is here. You can always find another ride off the island, and again, there were 2,000 other people there, so he wasn’t left alone by any means. They left the island at 4:30 pm.”

The friends named in the case are Warren Hudson, 19; Jax Pitalo, 20; and Morgan Seymour, 19. Their attorneys say the conspiracy theories that have circulated since July have produced direct threats against the young men, adding a layer of fear to an already traumatic period.
