G20 meeting in Atlanta opens without traditional group photograph
Activelifezero.com – Diplomats gathering in Atlanta for the G20 foreign ministers’ meeting began their talks Friday without the customary “family photo,” after objections emerged to appearing beside Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov.
More than one-third of the officials attending had indicated they might leave rather than join a photograph including Lavrov. The possibility of a public walkout prompted the United States to abandon the image altogether, removing what had become a growing point of friction before substantive discussions got underway.
US officials considered holding two separate photographs, one including Lavrov and another without him. Secretary of State Marco Rubio ultimately chose to cancel the ceremony, judging that the dispute risked turning a diplomatic tradition into a distracting spectacle.
“The photo was canceled after it became clear that some of the delegations were unwilling to participate in a joint photo,” a US official said.
The official said the United States wanted attention to remain on the meeting’s policy agenda and shared G20 priorities, rather than on a ceremonial image. Group photographs are a familiar feature of major international summits, but they can also become highly visible symbols of political disagreement.
Lavrov dismisses dispute over summit image
Speaking later Friday in Atlanta, Lavrov brushed aside the controversy and criticized the importance attached to the planned photograph. He also said he had a brief meeting with Rubio during the ministerial and described their exchange positively.
“If what matters most to them is how they look in the family photo and who is standing next to them, well, that says it all,” Lavrov told reporters.
Lavrov said he and Rubio “had a fairly good conversation.”
The disagreement over the photo reflected deeper strains within the G20, where ministers are attempting to discuss global economic challenges while confronting major conflicts and divergent positions on Russia’s war against Ukraine.
The meeting is expected to conclude with a statement from the chair instead of a negotiated joint declaration. That outcome would underscore the difficulty of obtaining agreement among the 20 participating countries on central geopolitical issues.
“We have wars going on and we have participants in those wars around the table, so it’s very difficult to agree a common line,” Polish Foreign Minister Radosław Sikorski said in Atlanta.
Ukraine and wider security concerns dominate discussions
Russia’s continuing assault on Ukraine has been a central issue at the gathering. The prospect of renewed US military action involving Iran after Tuesday’s midterm elections has also added to the uneasy international backdrop.
Rubio met separately in Atlanta with the foreign ministers of Saudi Arabia and Turkey. In his welcoming remarks, he portrayed the meeting as taking place at an especially consequential moment for the global economy and international security.
“We are facing a series of interconnected economic and geopolitical crises, many of which pose severe threats – severe threats to essential foundations of the global economic order,” Rubio said.
He pointed to pressure on energy supplies, food markets, supply chains, trade and freedom of navigation, and urged the G20 to improve economic resilience while protecting markets and the economies dependent on them.
“And the G20 must work together to confront these threats, to strengthen our economic resilience, to safeguard our markets and the economies that they sustain,” Rubio said.
Several ministers used the opening session to reaffirm support for Ukraine. British Foreign Secretary Ed Miliband addressed Lavrov directly in remarks supplied by the British embassy, accusing Moscow of responsibility for the war and highlighting a recent attack at the Dnipro railway.
“Let me say this directly to the Russian foreign minister – we all know who the aggressor in this war is,” Miliband said.
“Let’s talk about what happened at Dnipro railway yesterday. Only yesterday your drones attacked and killed 15 people. And there are countless examples like this of you killing innocent civilians throughout this war,” he said.
“We all know you are the aggressor. We all know you started this war four and a half years ago with the full-scale invasion of Ukraine.”
Differences over Washington’s Russia policy
European governments and the Trump administration remain divided over how to deal with Moscow, particularly over possible economic concessions. In recent weeks, President Donald Trump reached an oil agreement with Russia, waived sanctions on Moscow and increased pressure on Kyiv to halt attacks against Russian oil refineries.
A senior Russian official said discussions have taken place over potentially ending US sanctions targeting Russia’s multibillion-dollar sovereign wealth fund. Those developments have unfolded while Russia has continued deadly attacks on civilian locations in Ukraine.
German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul sought Friday morning to play down differences between the United States and its European partners. Yet the abandoned photograph illustrated how quickly those broader disputes can surface even in the most routine elements of international diplomacy.
For the G20, the immediate challenge is to keep ministers engaged on economic security, trade, food and energy despite the political divides around the table. The absence of a joint photo may be a small procedural decision, but it captures the larger difficulty facing a forum trying to find common ground during overlapping global crises.
