Yorktown, located in Delaware County, Indiana, declared a local disaster emergency on Thursday afternoon. First responders have been working continuously to facilitate evacuations as drone footage revealed homes, automobiles, and roadways submerged beneath muddy water. Lt. Blair Webster reported that the Yorktown Fire Department has assisted approximately ten individuals who became trapped in vehicles or homes surrounded by floodwater since Wednesday.

Water levels reached chest height in certain sections of Yorktown, according to Webster. The Yorktown Public Library shared photographs and video showing floodwater penetrating book stacks and submerging children’s toys on display.

By Thursday evening, the Delaware County emergency management office issued warnings about noxious, chemical, and foul odors emanating from the floodwaters. Residents were advised to monitor for symptoms such as nausea, dizziness, and headaches.

In Muncie, street flooding has become severe enough that rescuers are deploying motorized boats for water rescues. Essential infrastructure systems are experiencing failures throughout the city. Fire Chief Dan Burford, who has served with the department for twenty-nine years, told reporters he had never witnessed flooding of this magnitude during his career.

Search Operations and Evacuations Continue

Delaware County authorities are actively searching for eighteen-year-old Matthew Morey, who disappeared after reportedly jumping from a bridge into the Mississinewa River on Wednesday night alongside three companions. Search operations were temporarily halted on Thursday afternoon due to rising water levels but resumed on land and with thermal drones by Friday morning. Water-based search efforts remain suspended until river levels drop significantly.

“We will do everything we can short of putting others at risk until the river goes down several more feet,” Sheriff Tony Skinner stated.

Meanwhile, Anderson declared a local disaster emergency and issued evacuation orders along the swollen White River and other waterways on Thursday. Sheriff John Beeman reported that fire departments in Madison County have been conducting evacuations and water rescues throughout the day, while more than three hundred animals were relocated from a flooded animal shelter.

Heavy storms that drenched the region on Friday morning gradually subsided by early afternoon. Meteorologists predict another wave of storms will traverse the same area from late Friday through early Saturday. Iowa and Illinois face the highest probability of additional flooding rain, with a Level 3 of 4 risk rating. This system is expected to intensify overnight as storms progress eastward.
