Vehicle Enters Wichita Soccer Field, Leaving Two Dead and 11 Injured

Activelifezero.com – A youth soccer event in Wichita, Kansas, turned into a scene of panic Saturday afternoon after a vehicle entered a playing field at Stryker Sports Complex, killing a 6-year-old boy and a 35-year-old man and injuring 11 other people.

The incident unfolded at about 3:25 p.m. local time while families, players and spectators were gathered for games at the complex. Children were among those hurt, though police said the injuries suffered by survivors were not believed to be life-threatening.

A 34-year-old woman was taken into custody after the vehicle traveled through the sports complex. Her child had been participating in a game on another field, and two juveniles were inside the vehicle with her, Wichita Police Department representative Aaron Moses said. Investigators said the woman has cooperated with authorities.

Police have not established what caused the vehicle to enter the field, whether criminal charges will be pursued, or how the driver gained access to the fenced playing area. Investigators are also working to determine the vehicle’s speed and the route it took through the complex.

“This is a tragedy,” Moses said outside the complex.

Witnesses Describe Chaos Near Youth Games

Families had gathered across the sports complex for youth soccer when the vehicle crossed onto a nearby field. One person attending with family members said a black pickup truck mounted a curb before driving onto the grass. Two witnesses described hearing a loud sound as the incident occurred.

Vanessa Trammell was watching her 13-year-old son’s game near the field where people were struck. She said the truck continued across the neighboring field after spectators initially expected it to stop.

“We thought it was going to stop but then it like kept going,” Trammell said.

Her son’s game had just concluded, with players gathered in a sideline huddle, when the truck passed close to that area. Trammell said she focused on locating her son amid the commotion. She later saw the coach run toward the affected field to help injured people before paramedics reached the area.

“It was pure panic,” Trammell said. “I didn’t know what was going on – just that people were being hit. I’m pretty sure I probably screamed, but, absolutely, just pure panic was going through me.”

She noted that younger children regularly play at the fields, including the location where the vehicle entered. The complex hosts recreational and competitive soccer programs for players ranging from under-5 groups through high school, along with adult leagues.

Emergency Response Closes Sports Complex

Law enforcement officers and emergency crews converged on the property as the investigation began. Video from the scene showed young players in red uniforms gathered near emergency vehicles and yellow police tape.

Stryker Sports Complex has 11 outdoor turf fields as well as an indoor facility. The field area involved in the incident is fenced, with a concrete access route leading toward a parking lot. Investigators have not yet said how the vehicle passed through the gate.

All events at the complex have been canceled until further notice. In a statement, the facility asked the community to keep affected families and individuals in their thoughts and prayers.

Flag football state championship games planned at an adjacent field were also suspended while police worked at the scene. The interruption reflects the broader impact on a site built around weekend youth sports, where multiple teams and age groups can be active at the same time.

Victim Identification and Investigation Continue

The names of the two people who died have not been released. Officials are working to notify relatives before providing further identification details. It also remained unclear which soccer clubs had been playing on the field at the time.

Wichita Mayor Lily Wu said she was heartbroken by the events and urged people to stay away from the area while first responders and investigators continued their work.

“My thoughts and prayers are with everyone affected, especially the children and families involved,” Wu said.

Police have asked anyone with video from Stryker Sports Complex to share it with investigators. Footage from spectators, nearby vehicles or phones could help establish the vehicle’s movements before it reached the field and clarify the sequence of events.

Authorities planned to provide additional information at a Saturday evening news conference. The investigation remains ongoing as Wichita families seek answers following an afternoon meant for youth sports that ended in devastating loss.
