CNN warns Trump White House over Air Force One access

Activelifezero.com – CNN warns Trump White House that it may seek further legal action if the network remains excluded from Air Force One press-pool coverage. In a letter sent to the Justice Department on Monday, CNN said the administration must restore its access to presidential travel or face a new court challenge.

Ted Boutrous, outside counsel for CNN, said the network had been left out of travel pools without written notice or an explanation. The dispute follows a separate lawsuit involving White House credentials for CNN, MS NOW and Politico.

“These efforts to retaliate and discriminate against CNN based on the content of its news coverage are mistaken, counterproductive, and unlawful,” Boutrous wrote.

Why the Air Force One pool matters

The television pool system rotates coverage responsibilities among five major networks. The selected network supplies video from presidential events and travel that can then be used by news outlets worldwide. Excluding a scheduled pool network can therefore affect a much broader group of news organizations.

CNN has been omitted several times when it was scheduled to provide television pool coverage. The latest incident occurred during the previous weekend, when CNN was expected to cover President Donald Trump’s trip to Georgia and Florida but was not included in the out-of-town travel pool.

CNN warns Trump White House that Air Force One is not a minor setting for reporters. Journalists regularly question the president during travel, while video recorded aboard the aircraft often becomes part of the shared material used by other newsrooms.

Related lawsuit over White House access

The new warning is tied to litigation that began after Trump barred CNN, MS NOW and Politico from the White House a month earlier. The organizations argued that the restrictions violated First and Fifth Amendment protections.

A federal judge initially restored access temporarily and later issued a longer-lasting order as the lawsuit continued. US District Judge Tim Kelly granted a preliminary injunction, finding that the plaintiffs were likely to succeed in showing unconstitutional viewpoint discrimination under the First Amendment.

After the ruling, the administration restored White House access to the outlets involved. The Justice Department has continued to defend the restrictions in court, however, while the White House has faced claims that it has used other means to limit access for selected journalists.

“The Fake News has no place demanding a spot in the President’s Oval Office,” a White House official said after Kelly’s longer-term order last week.

Access beyond the briefing room

Boutrous argued that the Oval Office, airport tarmacs and Air Force One are central places for press access because Trump frequently takes questions there. Since returning to office in January 2025, Trump has answered more than 4,700 questions in the Oval Office, aboard Air Force One and on airport tarmacs.

By comparison, Trump has answered roughly 150 questions in the White House briefing room over the same period. Through September, he had appeared in that briefing room only four times, while holding 43 press events in the Oval Office and answering questions aboard or near Air Force One 51 times.

CNN warns Trump White House that limiting access to those locations has practical consequences for coverage of the presidency. CNN’s position is that access matters even more when presidential exchanges with reporters occur outside the traditional briefing room.
