11 Wounded in Shooting Near Florida A&M Stadium After Homecoming Game

The violence unfolded only hours after Florida A&M’s homecoming football game, a closely watched matchup in which the Arkansas–Pine Bluff Golden Lions defeated the Florida A&M Rattlers 31-28. Investigators have not established whether the shooting had any connection to the game or the homecoming events.

Tallahassee Police Chief Lawrence Revell said one person is in critical condition and three others suffered serious injuries. Eight victims were listed in stable condition. One of the people hurt is a Florida A&M student.

In addition to those struck by gunfire, the grandmother of one victim was injured while trying to escape the area near the stadium. The incident occurred near Perry Street, close to the university campus.

“We’re still working the scene. Our detectives, our sergeants, our forensic personnel are all on scene and processing this as we go, taking in as much information as they can. This is an ongoing investigation,” Revell said.

“The University is aware of an incident that occurred near campus on Perry Street on the evening of October 24. The Tallahassee Police Department is on the scene and actively investigating the situation,” Florida A&M said in a statement late Saturday.

The school said its campus remained safe while encouraging people to stay away from the affected area so law enforcement personnel could continue their work.

“Our hearts go out to the victims and all those affected by this tragic incident. While the campus remains safe, individuals are encouraged to avoid the area to allow law enforcement to conduct its investigation,” the university said.

Bragg Memorial Stadium sits at the center of Florida A&M’s athletic and campus life, particularly during homecoming weekend, when football events can bring large crowds to the area.
