Summer McCallum had traveled to Myrtle Beach with her uncle, Ernest McCallum, on a trip he organized to mark the sixth anniversary of her father’s death. The afternoon had begun peacefully. Ernest watched from the shore as Summer lingered in the shallows while the sun dipped lower. Then, when he looked out again, her head was bobbing in and out of the water, pulled steadily seaward by an invisible current. He ran into the surf immediately.

Sherry Weeks, a colleague, told CNN affiliate WMBF that Moore “did anything and everything with a smile” and was known as an “energetic, polite, special hero.”

Before Rockbridge, Moore taught at Jolly Elementary School, also near Atlanta, where he earned the 2024 teacher of the year distinction. His brother, Kameron Glasper, recalled that many students at that school loved soccer. Moore had never played or coached the sport himself, yet he started a team anyway so the children would have an extracurricular activity of their own.

Suzette Moore described her son as a “free spirit” who loved people so intensely that, as a small child, she had taken him to the police department to be fingerprinted because she feared someone might simply walk away with him. He was that friendly, she said.

The Aftermath and a Child’s Message

Ernest McCallum said Moore saved Summer’s life and his own as well. He explained that he would have stopped at nothing to reach his niece, even if it meant losing his own life in the process. But Moore’s act of courage meant McCallum never had to make that choice.

“He was a hero before that day. He was a hero to his family, his kids, his daddy, his mama, his family. He was a hero then. He just became a hero to everybody else on Friday,” McCallum said.

Summer, holding her uncle’s hand, told CNN affiliate WFMY that she did not yet fully grasp the severity of what had happened, though she knew intimately what it meant to lose someone important, having endured several family deaths over recent years. She offered a simple message she wished she could deliver to Moore:

“Thank you, I really owe my life to you.”

“I get to go back to school and love my family more than I did,” she continued, appearing to hold back tears.

McCallum said he wanted to reach Derrick Moore’s family to thank them for the selfless rescue of his niece and to learn more about who the teacher had been. Moore left behind four children, a fiancée, and a mother who still prays for a son the sea did not return.

Rip currents remain among the most common causes of drowning deaths at U.S. beaches, often striking swimmers who appear to be in calm, waist-deep water before the current accelerates and pulls them beyond their ability to swim back. Beach officials in South Carolina and neighboring states routinely urge visitors to swim near a lifeguard, watch for lines of foam moving steadily seaward, and never turn their back on the ocean.
