The damaged vessel remained difficult to enter hours after the fire began. Coast Guard spokesperson Commodore Noemie Cayabyab said thick smoke was still pouring from the ferry, creating dangerous conditions for emergency personnel.

Rescuers also faced concerns over intense heat within the vessel and the possibility of explosions. These hazards prevented teams from immediately conducting a full internal search, complicating efforts to determine whether anyone remained aboard.

Drone images released by the Coast Guard showed the scorched ferry floating in blue-green waters, still emitting smoke long after the initial emergency. Overnight, the vessel had moved farther from its first recorded position as currents and winds pushed it across the sea, adding another challenge to the expanding rescue effort.

Route Included Manila Departure and Coron Destination

The ferry left Baseco in Manila and was heading to Coron in Palawan, a destination well known for diving areas, beaches and island-hopping trips. Its manifest listed 117 passengers and 17 crew members, for a total of 134 people.

Among those brought to safety were two Chilean nationals, Philippine Coast Guard spokesperson for Palawan Aileen Ausente said. Aircraft were standing by to assist the operation if weather conditions allowed them to be used safely.

Search operations at sea can become increasingly difficult as time passes, particularly when people are dispersed over a broad area. The movement of the burned vessel itself illustrates the importance of tracking currents and wind direction.
