ICE Agent Shoots Delivery Driver in North Austin

Activelifezero.com – An adult man who works as a delivery driver was shot by a federal Immigration and Customs Enforcement agent Sunday afternoon in north Austin, leaving him hospitalized with a torso wound as state and local authorities begin examining what happened.

The man was taken to Dell Seton Medical Center and was listed in stable but serious condition, Austin Mayor Kirk Watson said. The shooting occurred shortly before 1 p.m. near Anderson Square and U.S. Route 183, an area of north-central Austin where city leaders say immigration enforcement activity has recently increased.

Questions remained unresolved Sunday about the circumstances leading to the gunfire, including whether the injured man was the intended subject of an ICE operation and whether he is a U.S. citizen. Rep. Greg Casar, the Democratic congressman whose district includes Austin, said those details had not yet been established.

Investigation Includes Austin Police and Texas Rangers

Austin Police Chief Lisa Davis said the confrontation may have included a foot pursuit involving the ICE agent. Austin police officers were not involved in the shooting itself, Watson said, though local investigators responded to the scene and assisted with traffic management.

The mayor said the Austin Police Department and the Texas Rangers would participate in the investigation. He also raised concerns about ICE conducting an internal inquiry into an incident involving one of its own agents.

“While I’m unhappy and I’m angry about it, I’m not surprised at all,” Watson said. “It’s happened in other cities with the nature of ICE and the way ICE is doing its business these days.”

Watson said he was “very angry” and “extremely unhappy” that an ICE agent had shot someone in the city. His comments reflected the growing tension between Austin officials and federal immigration authorities as enforcement operations expand in communities across the country.

Video recorded after the shooting showed a damaged blue Toyota Corolla near the scene. The vehicle appeared to have damage around its front passenger-side door, while its rear passenger-side window showed at least two apparent bullet holes. Witness recordings and local television footage documented the vehicle as officers secured the area.

Family Seeks Answers as Federal Response Remains Unclear

Casar said he had been in contact with people representing the injured man’s family and had spoken with relatives after the shooting. He said the family’s immediate concern was being able to see their loved one while he received medical care.

“Right now, this man’s family is just trying to see him,” Casar said.

The congressman called for an independent investigation, arguing that more information is needed before the public can understand the sequence of events. He said Austin has experienced an influx of ICE activity, particularly in the part of the city where Sunday’s incident unfolded.

“ICE needs to get out of our city and start telling people the truth,” Casar said. “We need the facts in this case to really understand what fully happened, but what we are seeing from ICE in Texas and across the country is unacceptable.”

The Department of Homeland Security had not issued a response to requests for comment Sunday. Officials also sought comment from the office of Republican Gov. Greg Abbott and the Texas Department of Public Safety.

Immigration Enforcement Has Drawn Increasing Scrutiny

The Austin shooting comes during a broader push by the Trump administration to significantly expand immigration enforcement operations nationwide. Federal immigration agents have been deployed in several Democratic-led cities, including Los Angeles, Chicago and Minneapolis, intensifying debates over public safety, civil liberties and the limits of federal authority.

Federal officers have fatally shot at least four people during operations across the United States, including two American citizens. In July, an ICE agent fatally shot a Mexican national in Houston during a traffic stop involving the man’s work van.

Texas is led by Republicans at the state level, but Austin has long been a strongly Democratic city. That political divide has often shaped the response to immigration policy, particularly when federal enforcement actions occur in densely populated neighborhoods and commercial areas.

For residents, the investigation will likely focus on several central issues: why the agent engaged the man, whether the use of force followed federal policy, what role any pursuit played, and whether body-camera, vehicle-camera or other video evidence can clarify the encounter. Authorities had not publicly released those details Sunday.

Protesters Gather Near the Scene

By Sunday afternoon, dozens of demonstrators had gathered near the location of the shooting. Some crossed the roadway while carrying Mexican flags. Across the street, officers wearing helmets stood behind yellow police tape as the area remained under control.

The League of United Latin American Citizens, a Texas-founded Latino civil rights organization, urged Congress to create independent immigration oversight. The group also called for investigations and prosecutions when DHS or ICE personnel violate constitutional rights.

“No agency should be the sole judge of its own conduct,” Roman Palomares, LULAC chair and national president, said in a statement. “When the government takes or endangers a life, the Constitution demands due process and accountability, and those protections belong to every person in this country.”

As investigators work to determine the facts, the shooting is expected to renew attention on how federal immigration operations are carried out in Austin and elsewhere. The injured man remained hospitalized Sunday, while officials and his family awaited a fuller account of the confrontation.
