19-Year-Old Coworker Arrested After Fatal Stabbing of Woman in Fairfax County Park

Fairfax County authorities arrested Alexis Antonio Cedillos-Campos, 19, on Wednesday morning in Maryland, where he confessed to the homicide of 42-year-old Carmen Lizet Puch. Her body was discovered Monday morning outside her vehicle in a quiet stretch of Difficult Run Park, a wooded trail area off Georgetown Pike in Great Falls, Virginia.

Authorities identified Cedillos-Campos as an undocumented immigrant originally from El Salvador. Federal immigration records show that Customs and Border Protection detained him in 2024 after he crossed the border illegally near El Paso, Texas. He is currently awaiting extradition back to Virginia, and it remains unclear whether he has retained legal counsel.

A Killing Police Called “Brutal” and “Unspeakable”

Police Chief Kevin Davis laid out the sequence of events at a Wednesday press briefing, describing surveillance video that captured the suspect at a restaurant where both he and Puch were employed. The footage, Davis said, shows Cedillos-Campos preparing for what would follow.

“We have video footage of our suspect at the restaurant where he worked with our victim, arming himself with a fixed blade knife, taking a pair of black latex gloves, taking a water bottle, and then off he goes with the intent to do harm and kill the victim.”

The chief added that the victim sustained numerous stab wounds delivered in what he characterized as a savage and prolonged manner.

“Our victim suffered numerous stab wounds in a really brutal, unspeakable way.”

Investigators determined that the two had arranged to meet deliberately in a remote, unlit section of the park where no surveillance cameras operated. Once there, the attack took place. A jogger stumbled upon Puch’s body early Monday morning and dialed 911. Officers arriving at the scene found the victim had also been doused in gasoline. Police said Cedillos-Campos had siphoned fuel from his own motorcycle and stored it in a water bottle before the encounter, suggesting a premeditated plan to set the body alight.

“No one deserves to be treated the way that our victim was treated and she was stabbed repeatedly – repeatedly – by our 19-year-old killer. The way that she was treated by this killer was reprehensible to say the least.”

A Mother Left Behind

Puch was described by police as a devoted mother to a 3-year-old girl. The suspect, authorities noted, is not the child’s biological father. The toddler is now in the care of Puch’s family while the investigation proceeds.

Residents who regularly use the Difficult Run trail system expressed shock to local news outlets this week, describing the wooded area as a peaceful spot for hiking and swimming where such violence seemed unthinkable.

Immigration Policy Back in the Spotlight

The suspect’s status as an undocumented immigrant has once again drawn national attention to border enforcement and immigration policy. The Department of Homeland Security issued a statement on Wednesday linking the case to broader administration priorities.

Thanks to his strong leadership and continuing the unprecedented trend of historically low border crossings and apprehensions, we now have the most secure border in history—including 15 consecutive months of zero releases at the border.”

Many researchers who study the intersection of migration and crime have found little statistical correlation between undocumented immigration and overall crime rates. Nevertheless, high-profile cases involving undocumented immigrants have repeatedly fueled political debate.

In 2024, Jose Antonio Ibarra, an undocumented migrant, killed nursing student Laken Riley while she jogged on the University of Georgia campus. After Ibarra received a life sentence, several Republican leaders cited the case to argue for stricter border controls. Georgia Governor Brian Kemp used the tragedy to criticize the immigration posture of the preceding administration, asserting that Ibarra should never have been permitted to enter the country.

The current administration’s return to power brought a series of anti-migration measures, including a pause on asylum adjudications, a review of cases processed under the prior administration, and a stated “reexamination” of certain green-card holders. Tensions escalated further after an Afghan migrant allegedly shot two National Guard members in Washington, D.C., last year; one of the two later died.

In December, Oscar Solarzano, an undocumented immigrant previously deported from the United States twice, was charged in a stabbing aboard the Charlotte, North Carolina light-rail system. That incident came just two weeks after the conclusion of Operation Charlotte’s Web, a sweeping immigration-enforcement sweep carried out by federal agents in the city.
