Sweden’s center-left bloc edges toward government after tight election

Activelifezero.com – Sweden could be heading for a change of government after preliminary results from Sunday’s election put the center-left opposition narrowly ahead of the ruling right-wing parties. With most votes counted by Monday, the bloc led by Social Democrat Magdalena Andersson was projected to take 176 seats in the 349-member parliament, compared with 173 for Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson’s alliance.

The margin is exceptionally small, with the competing blocs separated by only 0.4% of the vote on Monday morning. The count was not yet complete: 353 election districts remained outstanding, while overseas ballots were not expected to be fully counted until Wednesday. Party leaders therefore avoided treating the result as final.

“If this result remains valid, Sweden will get a new government,” Andersson told supporters after the preliminary results were published on Sunday night.

A confirmed victory would interrupt four years in which Swedish politics has shifted significantly to the right, particularly on immigration. Sweden was long regarded as one of Europe’s more welcoming destinations for people seeking refuge, but the present government has overseen a much stricter asylum system. The direction of travel may change under a center-left administration, though a return to the broad open-door policies associated with earlier decades appears unlikely.

Far right loses ground, but the result remains unsettled

The Sweden Democrats, a far-right party that had hoped to enter government for the first time if Kristersson’s bloc prevailed, were projected to lose 11 seats. Their setback comes as established parties across Europe continue to watch the fortunes of far-right movements closely, particularly after gains by the far right in Germany.

Still, Sweden’s election history offers a warning against early declarations. Exit polling in 2022 initially pointed to a slim center-left victory, but that indication did not hold. Kristersson did not concede when he addressed supporters after voting ended on Sunday, reflecting both the closeness of the race and the votes still to be counted.

The eventual parliamentary arithmetic matters because Sweden’s parties are divided not only between left and right, but also over the practical terms of cooperation. Even if Andersson’s side secures its projected lead, negotiations on a cabinet could prove difficult and prolonged.

Coalition talks may determine the shape of the next government

Andersson would be expected to become prime minister if the center-left result is confirmed. Yet it remains uncertain which parties would formally join her government and which might instead support it from outside the cabinet.

The Center Party has said it will not govern alongside the Left Party. The Left Party, meanwhile, maintains that it must have a place in any coalition arrangement. Those positions create a potentially difficult path for the Social Democrats, who must assemble a workable parliamentary majority while keeping together parties with sharply different priorities.

“It could very well be a complicated process to form a government,” the speaker of the parliament, Andreas Norlen, told Swedish television.

That process could shape the practical reach of a new administration. A narrow seat advantage would give Andersson’s bloc an opportunity to take power, but it would also leave little room for internal disagreement. Any government depending on several parties would need to balance competing demands on taxes, welfare and migration.

Foreign policy continuity is likely

Despite the domestic political stakes, Sweden’s broad international orientation is unlikely to change dramatically. The country is expected to remain firmly pro-Western and supportive of Ukraine, regardless of whether Kristersson stays in office or Andersson forms the next government.

The more immediate questions concern economic policy and social priorities. Andersson has campaigned on increased welfare spending, a fairer tax system and stronger social cohesion. These themes offer a contrast with the outgoing government’s approach, but they do not automatically resolve differences within the center-left camp.

The Greens and the Left Party want wealthier people to make a greater contribution. The Center Party, however, opposes a tax on billionaires. Such disagreements could become central during coalition negotiations, particularly if every parliamentary vote is needed to sustain a new government.

Migration policy may soften in tone, not necessarily in substance

Immigration remains one of the most consequential areas of uncertainty. The current government has pushed asylum numbers down to their lowest level in 40 years. Its measures have included ending permanent residency for refugees, tightening welfare rules and increasing expulsions of people without a legal right to remain in Sweden.

The Left Party and the Greens have argued for looser rules, but Andersson has signaled that the Social Democrats do not intend to abandon a tougher approach. Her position suggests that a center-left government could adjust the political tone of the debate and revisit selected policies without restoring the earlier system in full.

For voters, the election result points to a country divided by only a handful of seats but facing major choices over the character of its welfare state, the fairness of its tax system and the limits of its migration policy. The final count will decide which bloc gets the first chance to govern. The negotiations that follow will reveal how much of Sweden’s recent rightward shift can truly be reversed.
