Activelifezero.com – Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky’s planned departure from Moldova for Norway was postponed after officials temporarily shut the country’s airspace following a Russian drone alert.

The aircraft carrying Zelensky was cleared to depart on Tuesday only after authorities determined that a Russian drone had fallen inside Moldova. The incident underscored the security risks surrounding travel by Ukraine’s president as the war continues to affect countries beyond Ukraine’s borders.

Moldovan officials said the drone exploded about 160 kilometers, or 100 miles, from Chișinău International Airport. During the airspace closure, three outbound flights and four incoming flights were delayed before restrictions were eventually lifted.

Two drones entered Moldovan airspace

Authorities said two Russian drones crossed into Moldova on Tuesday. One came down in a field north of the capital, causing a fire. The other continued onward into Romanian airspace.

Moldova sits between Ukraine and Romania, making its airspace particularly sensitive when Russian attacks take place near Ukraine’s western and southern borders. Drone incursions have repeatedly raised concerns that the conflict could create direct hazards for civilians and aviation in neighboring countries.

Moldovan President Maia Sandu described the incursions as a grave danger to human life. She also condemned a Russian drone strike on a border crossing with Ukraine that killed two people.

“Serious threat to people’s lives”

The disruption came while Zelensky’s aircraft was on the ground at Chișinău airport. Moldova’s ambassador to the United States, Vladislav Kulminski, said officials did not believe the timing should automatically be dismissed as coincidence, though he stressed that investigators had not reached a conclusion about whether the Ukrainian leader was the intended target.

“Most likely this is not an accident because we do not believe in jet propelled drones just flying into Moldova’s territory for surveillance purposes while [the] Ukrainian president’s airplane is on the ground at the airport,”

Kulminski said it was still too soon to determine whether the drone had been directed at Zelensky. He noted, however, that Moldova is known to be part of the Ukrainian president’s travel route when he undertakes foreign visits.

“This is probably not the first time that something like this happened.”

Russia’s government had not commented publicly on the episode.

Norwegian leader cites close call

Zelensky was traveling to Oslo to attend the funeral of Norway’s King Harald V. Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre said Wednesday that the Ukrainian president’s plane had come close to being hit as it prepared to leave Moldova.

“His plane was almost hit by a drone as it was about to take off from Moldova. That is the reality he is facing,”

Støre did not identify the source of that information or specify the distance between the aircraft and the drone. The Moldovan account focused on the airspace closure and the discovery of a drone on its territory.

The differing details do not change the central picture: a drone incident in Moldova interrupted the travel of a foreign head of state and forced aviation authorities to treat the situation as an immediate security concern. Even when a drone does not strike an airport or aircraft directly, uncertainty over its location, flight path and possible payload can require officials to restrict air traffic until the danger is assessed.

Zelensky later arrived in Norway and joined other heads of state in central Oslo for the funeral procession, walking behind King Harald V’s coffin. He departed Norway shortly after the ceremony concluded.

Canada visit follows Norway trip

After leaving Oslo, Zelensky and First Lady Olena Zelenska were expected to travel to Canada on Wednesday. Their visit with Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney is scheduled to continue through September 11.

The journey illustrates the demanding security conditions that accompany Zelensky’s diplomatic travel. His overseas visits involve not only meetings with foreign leaders but also the practical challenge of moving safely through a region affected by missile and drone activity.

For Moldova, the event adds to broader concerns about sovereignty and regional stability. The country has repeatedly faced the consequences of the war next door, including airspace violations and debris from Russian weapons. Its authorities must balance the need to maintain normal civilian aviation with the responsibility to respond rapidly when aerial threats emerge.

The drone alert delayed a major presidential trip but did not prevent it. Still, the incident offered a stark reminder that the risks created by the war can extend beyond the battlefield, affecting airports, border areas, commercial flights and the movements of political leaders across Eastern Europe.
