Barry Morphew Back Behind Bars Days After Alleged Denver Hit-and-Run

Activelifezero.com – Barry Morphew, the 58-year-old Colorado man already facing a first-degree murder charge tied to his wife’s disappearance, was taken into custody Thursday night in Boulder after allegedly violating a court-ordered house-arrest directive. The arrest came just days after he was accused of striking two vehicles in a Denver crash on August 26 and fleeing the scene without exchanging identification.

The Boulder County Sheriff’s Office confirmed that deputies booked Morphew into the Boulder County Jail for failing to comply with a stay-at-home order issued Wednesday by Alamosa County District Judge Amanda Hopkins. A bond hearing is set for Tuesday. Morphew has not yet been formally charged in connection with the Denver collision.

The Crash-Scene Interaction

Court records reveal a tense roadside exchange captured on video by one of the drivers whose car was struck. Judge Hopkins described how a “concerned citizen” observed Morphew drive “aggressively prior to striking two vehicles.” Hopkins stated she reviewed a portion of the footage that had been included in a local news broadcast.

“During the interaction, a person who is very clearly the Defendant refused to provide his name or identification and indicated … he does not have insurance. The Defendant offered the other driver $300 for the damage to her vehicle, which she refused, and he is seen buffing the scratches on the other driver’s vehicle with his hand and tshirt.”

The woman, identified only as Christina, said she repeatedly asked Morphew for his insurance information and identification while filming. When he attempted to rub away the scratches on her car with his bare hand and a t-shirt, she declined his $300 cash offer and told him she was calling police. Video shows the driver of the second struck vehicle stepping in front of Morphew’s car, apparently trying to block his departure. He then reversed the vehicle and drove away, Hopkins wrote, “almost striking another individual and driving over a curb to do so.”

Christina said she did not recognize Morphew at the time of the crash. The following day, however, her mother watched the video and identified him.

Bond Terms and the GPS Trail

Morphew had been out on a $3 million bond after his re-arrest last year on the first-degree murder charge connected to the death of his wife, Suzanne Morphew. His release conditions generally confined him to his residence, with exceptions only for medical appointments, emergencies, meetings with his legal team, court appearances, or work.

The 12th Judicial District Attorney’s Office requested GPS data from Morphew’s tracking device. That data showed he left his home and drove to Denver International Airport, where his attorneys told the district attorney’s office it was “possible he was picking up his daughter.” The office characterized any non-work trip to the airport as constituting “a breach of his bond” and noted it “also presents an extreme flight risk” in a court filing asking the judge to tighten his conditions.

Before the alleged crash, the GPS trail placed Morphew driving through areas near hotels and a mall at various points during the day. The data ultimately pinpointed him “in the area of the alleged crash” in Denver.

On Wednesday, Hopkins responded by ordering Morphew to “remain in his home at all times, no exceptions.” He did not comply, prompting the Thursday-night arrest.

The Suzanne Morphew Case

The murder charge stems from the 2020 disappearance of Suzanne Morphew, then 49, who vanished during a Mother’s Day bicycle ride near Maysville, Colorado, roughly 110 miles from Colorado Springs. Barry Morphew was first charged with her murder in May 2021, but prosecutors dropped the case, explaining they needed additional time to locate her remains. Because the initial charges were dismissed without prejudice, the state retained the ability to pursue a prosecution later.

In 2023, Colorado authorities located the remains of Suzanne Morphew, prompting the re-arrest and the current first-degree murder charge. At the time of his original release, Colorado law permitted holding defendants without bail only in “certain, extremely limited, circumstances” that did not apply to his case, Hopkins noted. Voters have since expanded the situations in which bail can be denied, but court documents indicate the change is unlikely to apply retroactively because Morphew was charged before the new provisions took effect.

Morphew’s attorneys were contacted for comment but had not responded as of publication.
