Heckled at a Madison Square Garden Rally, NYC Nominee Brad Lander Refuses to Back Down

The rally had drawn thousands to hear Mohan Bhagwat, chief of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh, speak on behalf of Hindu nationalist interests. Among those present was Brad Lander, the former New York City comptroller who had just won a hard-fought Democratic congressional seat in June. What followed was not the warm reception Lander had expected.

“We don’t want no Zionists here. Get the f**k out!”

The outburst, captured on video and quickly spreading across social platforms, was directed squarely at Lander. A second voice joined in: “You say you’re a liberal but we know how you act.” Another protester, clutching a keffiyeh and jabbing a finger toward the former comptroller, repeated the refrain: “No Zionists, no Zionists.” A fourth shouted, “This guy supports Israel.”

Lander, who describes himself as a liberal Zionist and a vocal critic of the Israeli government’s conduct in Gaza, did not leave. Several fellow attendees pushed back against the disruption. When one heckler called him a “Zionist ball sack,” Lander reportedly answered, “Bring it on,” before turning to shake the hand of another participant who thanked him for showing up.

A Primary Divided Over Gaza

The Saturday incident lands in the middle of a broader fracture within the Democratic Party over how to weigh American backing for Israel. Since Hamas launched its October 7, 2023, assault that killed roughly 1,200 people and seized more than 250 hostages, the question of U.S. military aid to Israel has become a litmus test in Democratic primaries. More than 70,000 people have died in Gaza since the war began, a toll that has intensified pressure on the party’s left flank to demand concessions from Washington.

Lander’s own June contest against incumbent Representative Dan Goldman broke along precisely these ideological lines. Both men are Jewish and both identify as Zionists, yet Lander argued that Goldman had not gone far enough in criticizing Israeli policy. He labeled Israel’s military campaign in Gaza a genocide — a characterization the Israeli government flatly rejects — and urged restrictions on American arms shipments. He also charged that Goldman remained beholden to the American Israel Public Affairs Committee, or AIPAC, throughout the race.

At the same time, Lander has consistently defended Israel’s right to exist as a Jewish state. Earlier this year he severed his membership in the Democratic Socialists of America after the organization promoted a pro-Palestinian rally the day following the Hamas attacks. That decision underscored a position he has maintained: opposition to specific Israeli government actions does not equate to opposition to the state itself.

Organizers Apologize; Lander Stays the Course

Both Hindu and Muslim community groups moved quickly to distance themselves from the hecklers. The Indian American Muslim Council, which had helped organize the Madison Square Garden event, posted on X that the individuals responsible “were not part of IAMC or our coalition and did not speak for us,” adding: “We offer Brad Lander our sincere apologies for the treatment he received.”

Hindus for Human Rights issued its own statement on X, calling Lander “a Jewish leader who has vocally disavowed the genocide in Palestine and is a rare progressive voice against the RSS.” The group noted that multiple organizations had invited Lander to the protest as a longtime ally who understands the majority’s role in combating hate in their communities, and that its representatives worked to de-escalate the situation. Lander remained at the venue and spoke with reporters afterward.

In a statement released Sunday evening, Lander framed his presence in terms of the rally’s original purpose.

“Yesterday’s event was dedicated to standing up against the persecution of religious minorities. I was honored to be invited and glad to participate. I won’t stop joining rallies against hate — in India, in Israel and Palestine, or in New York City — because of a couple of loud numbskulls.”

The Broader Pattern

The Madison Square Garden episode is not an isolated flare-up. During Lander’s own primary, a Brooklyn coffee shop appeared to ban Goldman — himself critical of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu — according to screenshots of a since-deleted social media post. The deleted caption read: “Hey Congressman Dan Goldman, we see that you stopped by our shop today for a coffee. Do you see how it doesn’t taste like genocide juice? Or are you still having a hard time telling the difference?”

In June, California state Senator Scott Weiner, a prominent gay and Jewish Democrat running for Congress, was surrounded by demonstrators at San Francisco’s annual Trans March who accused him of supporting genocide in Gaza. Weiner has said he supports Israel’s right to exist as a Jewish state while criticizing specific government decisions.

For Lander, now seated in Congress and aligned with Mayor Zohran Mamdani’s progressive orbit in New York, the Saturday heckling crystallizes a tension the party has struggled to manage: how to hold firm to Israel’s existence as a Jewish state while simultaneously demanding accountability for its military conduct. The answer, at least as Lander articulated it Sunday night, is that he will keep showing up — at rallies, at protests, and in the halls of power — regardless of who is drumming in the background.
