A Global Search: Families Across Continents Await Word After Nepal-China Flood Catastrophe

Among the missing are a physician based in Delaware, a New Zealand mother of two children, and three teenagers from the United States and Australia. The region where the flooding occurred draws large numbers of visitors each summer and into early autumn for trekking, river rafting, and religious pilgrimage to temples and sacred sites venerated across multiple faiths. It also hosts several hydropower projects backed by foreign investment, adding another layer of international exposure to an already volatile landscape.

The Geography of Devastation

The communities most severely struck sit along the banks of the Trishuli River, which threads through the districts of Rasuwa, Nuwakot, and Dhading. Recent census figures place the combined population of these districts at more than half a million. The area is home to a mosaic of ethnic groups — Tamang, Gurung, Newar, and others — many of whom have inhabited the valley for centuries. Agriculture remains the backbone of local livelihoods, though tourism has grown steadily as the region’s outdoor appeal and spiritual significance have attracted increasing numbers of visitors.

Each summer, hundreds of Hindu, Buddhist, Jain, and Bonpo pilgrims pass through the area on their way to Tibet’s sacred Mount Kailash, one of the most revered peaks in multiple religious traditions. The convergence of seasonal pilgrims, adventure tourists, and local residents in a narrow river corridor amplifies the human cost when the landscape fails.

A Landscape Already Scarred

These communities carry deep scars from earlier catastrophes. Districts such as Rasuwa have long recorded poverty rates well above the national average and sit squarely on the front lines of the climate crisis, exposed to forest fires, glacial lake outbursts, and landslides. Many residents had spent years rebuilding after Nepal’s devastating 2015 earthquake, which killed more than 8,000 people and displaced hundreds of thousands. Families displaced by that quake resettled on the low-lying banks of the Trishuli — the very ground that turned lethal on Wednesday.

China’s Side of the Border

The disaster did not stop at Nepal’s frontier. The initial powerful landslide occurred on the China-Nepal border, and a subsequent mudslide struck Gyirong Port in China, a major land border crossing that serves as a critical logistics node for trade and travel between the two countries. Hundreds of people on the Chinese side are also reported missing, compounding the scale of the emergency and straining rescue coordination across an international boundary.

As of Thursday, officials on both sides have not published names of those confirmed dead or still missing. Rescue operations continue, but the full toll remains unknown. Social media platforms are saturated with pleas for help, many posted by members of the Nepali diaspora scattered across the globe.

Voices from the Diaspora

The Nepali diaspora numbers more than 2.1 million people worldwide, and Wednesday’s disaster sent shockwaves through communities from New York to Ottawa to Kathmandu. Families separated by thousands of miles scrambled to reach relatives in the affected districts, only to find that the flood had severed phone lines, internet connectivity, and road access.

Asmita Dahal, living in the capital Kathmandu, learned that her younger brother had been in the danger zone. Suman Dahal, 21, works for a tour company that escorts pilgrims to Mount Kailash. He had been preparing to return to Kathmandu from Timure, a small settlement on the Trishuli’s bank, when the waters rose.

“We are worried his bus might have been swept away in the flooding, we just don’t know,” Asmita said. “We are hoping for a miracle.”

The last words her brother spoke to her on Wednesday were: “See you in the morning.”

Pema D. Gurung, who runs a Nepali restaurant in New York, said he had no idea whether his many friends in Rasuwa survived. The flood had cut off all connectivity, and contacts in Kathmandu were equally unable to reach anyone in the valley.

“In my mind and in my heart, I’m hoping my friends are alive,” Gurung said.

Rojina Dhungana, a resident of Ottawa, Canada, woke on Wednesday to news that her hometown on the Trishuli riverbank had been swept away. Her parents were confirmed safe, but numerous former neighbors and schoolmates remained unaccounted for.

“Everybody I knew – my friends, my relatives, my community – everybody was looking, like ‘Help, help, help, this person is missing!'” she said.

The Numbers Behind the Names

The Nepal Tourism Board has confirmed that at least 517 foreign nationals are among those missing in Nepal. The breakdown includes at least 178 Indian nationals, many of whom were en route to Mount Kailash on pilgrimage. Other nationalities represented among the missing include 65 Americans, 53 Ukrainians, 51 Malaysians, 35 Australians, and 33 British citizens. The sheer diversity of nationalities underscores how deeply the region is woven into global tourism and pilgrimage networks.

For now, the search continues. Families on every continent are holding their breath, refreshing phones, posting appeals, and waiting for information that may take days to arrive from a valley where the river has rewritten the map.
