A catchy new song is all over the internet. Paul Simon might not like it
A New Viral Hit Has Kyle Gordon Comparing Himself to Weird Al
Activelifezero.com – Internet audiences have discovered another comedic musical sensation in Kyle Gordon, whose latest creation “Mr. Jambo” has captured millions of viewers worldwide. The 33-year-old performer has built his career on satirizing fellow musicians, and after a brief period following his 2023 breakthrough, he has once again found massive success.
From Planet of the Bass to Mr. Jambo
Gordon first achieved widespread recognition in 2023 with “Planet of the Bass,” a parody targeting ’90s Europop acts such as Aqua. The track generated enormous online momentum, earning features across major publications including the New York Times, Rolling Stone, and NPR. Some critics even labeled it the definitive “song of the summer.” Its cultural footprint extended further when The Simpsons produced a remix version. Following that triumph, Gordon released two comedy albums exploring various musical styles—emo, nu metal, and British rap—yet none achieved the same level of breakout popularity until his newest effort.
“Mr. Jambo” centers on a character called Barry Bergen who journeys across the African savannah while pursuing spiritual enlightenment. Throughout the song, local residents struggle to communicate with him. In one memorable moment, a frustrated man attempts to explain something in Zulu, only for Bergen to interpret the words as references to “the valley of the soul” and “the wisdom written on the ancient scrolls.”
A Paul Simon Connection
The musical foundation of “Mr. Jambo” draws heavily from Paul Simon’s legendary 1980s album “Graceland,” which Simon recorded during his travels to South Africa. Gordon has consistently expressed admiration for the record, calling it a masterpiece. His enthusiasm for the project proved so strong that he personally financed a journey to South Africa and Eswatini in April to film the accompanying music video.
That financial gamble has clearly paid off. Since uploading the video to his social media platforms last week, it has accumulated millions of views and generated significant buzz. Streamer Hasan Piker described Gordon as a “generational talent,” while comedian Gianmarco Soresi admitted he was completely “obsessed” with the track. One X user summed up the sentiment perfectly: “We finally found the Millennial Weird Al.”
What Gordon Says About the Success
In a recent conversation with CNN, Gordon discussed the viral phenomenon, the comparisons to Weird Al Yankovic, and whether he believes Paul Simon might be upset with him. When asked about his approach to comedy, Gordon explained his philosophy:
I appreciate you saying that because that balance is my number one goal. I enjoy going niche because it means it’ll be unique. Ideally, it’s a territory and a subject that hasn’t really been covered in comedy. But the goal is also to make it accessible.
He also reflected on the decision to travel to Africa for the video:
Tunnel vision! There were a lot of people telling me, “Why do you need to go to Africa? You can just find somewhere out we…”
Looking Ahead
Gordon’s third album, titled “Kyle Gordon Is Everywhere,” will include “Mr. Jambo” along with narration from Daniel Radcliffe, the Harry Potter star. The record is scheduled for release on October 2.
When discussing the inspiration behind the song, Gordon noted that hearing Johnny Clegg’s music about a year ago helped him realize the project was about more than just Graceland:
Oh, it’s not just ‘Graceland.’ There’s a whole trend that happened here with combining Western rock and pop music with traditional African music.
As Gordon continues to ride the wave of “Mr. Jambo” success, he remains focused on creating content that resonates with both niche audiences and mainstream viewers alike.
