Mother Speaks Out After Son’s Fatal Fall From High-Rise Railing

Joshua Robbins, a 23-year-old man, lost his life when the railing he leaned against gave way, causing him to plummet five floors. His mother, Fiona Garrett, has emphasized that the accident “could have affected anyone,” underscoring the preventable nature of the incident.

The tragic event unfolded outside his father’s flat on Newton Street, London, as Joshua went to check if their ordered pizza had arrived. Emergency services were dispatched to Holland and Thurston Dwellings in Holborn shortly before 8:30 p.m. on January 29, but the young man was pronounced dead at the scene.

Joshua’s father was “deeply traumatised” and grappling with “survivor’s guilt,” according to Ms. Garrett. She recounted the moment: “He went out to check the railing, just to peek around and see if the pizza was for them. While giving instructions, the railings collapsed, and Josh fell five floors to his death.”

Ms. Garrett, who was not present during the incident, described the tragedy as a “catastrophic incident that should never have occurred.” She criticized the lack of immediate action, stating that paramedics arrived swiftly but confirmed his injuries were “not compatible with life.”

In response, Joshua’s family launched the “No More Falls” campaign, advocating for stricter safety standards in high-rise buildings equipped with similar railings or balcony setups. “This has to mean something,” she insisted, “he can’t just disappear without reason.”

Family and Community Impact

The incident occurred in the constituency of Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer, and Ms. Garrett noted receiving a reply from him. She described it as “personal and genuine,” though she stressed the need for tangible solutions over empty reassurances.

She demanded, “I want people to understand this isn’t going away. I don’t want to hear ‘lessons learnt’ or be given nonsense. I want actual action.”

Pippa Fleetwood-Read, CEO of Islington and Shoreditch Housing Association (ISHA), which manages the site, issued a statement: “Joshua’s death has deeply affected everyone who knew him. His parents, family, and neighbors are enduring profound grief, and we offer our heartfelt condolences.”

“We’re supporting residents with counseling, daily on-site presence, and regular visits from a dedicated officer. Weekly updates ensure transparency as the investigation progresses,” she added, noting that further comments were pending until the police inquiry concluded.

The Metropolitan Police confirmed the inquiry is in its early stages, with experts and witnesses being interviewed. They highlighted the complexity of the case, stating that the coroner has been informed and a full report will follow the conclusion of the investigation. “Joshua’s family remains closely involved and is being supported by specialized officers,” the force said.
