FBI releases images of masked person in hunt for Savannah Guthrie’s mother

FBI Releases Images in Search for Nancy Guthrie’s Disappearance
The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) has released images of a masked individual in the ongoing search for Nancy Guthrie, the mother of news anchor Savannah Guthrie. Officials are actively seeking to identify the person, who they claim was armed, nearly nine days after the 84-year-old woman vanished from her home in Tucson, Arizona.
Family Maintains Hope for Nancy Guthrie’s Safe Return
Savannah Guthrie stated on Tuesday that her family believes their mother is still alive and launched a new appeal for anyone with information. Nancy Guthrie disappeared during the middle of the night on 31 January and was last seen at her home. Authorities suspect she was taken against her will.
“As of this morning, law enforcement has uncovered these previously inaccessible new images showing an armed individual appearing to have tampered with the camera at Nancy Guthrie’s front door the morning of her disappearance,” said FBI Director Kash Patel in a statement on X.
Patel explained that authorities had been working to recover images from the home’s surveillance system, which “may have been lost, corrupted, or inaccessible due to a variety of factors—including the removal of recording devices.”
Video Evidence Shows Masked Person’s Actions
Officials also shared two short videos depicting the person approaching Nancy Guthrie’s front door, checking the camera before moving away, and picking up vegetation from the ground to cover the camera lens. Savannah Guthrie posted the new video on Instagram, urging the public for help.
“Someone out there recognizes this person,” she said on Tuesday. “We believe she is still out there. Bring her home.”
This marks the first significant breakthrough in a case that has captivated the nation. On Monday, police had not yet identified any suspects or vehicles linked to Nancy Guthrie’s disappearance, the same day Savannah Guthrie released her latest video appeal.
Additional Clues and Reward Offered
Savannah Guthrie’s family has released four video appeals in recent days, including one indicating they would pay for their mother’s safe return. Police highlighted Nancy Guthrie’s need for daily medication and her limited mobility. The FBI is offering a $50,000 (£36,000) reward for information in the case.
“The prayers of this entire White House are with Savannah and her family at this time,” said White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt. “We hope this person is found soon and her mother is brought home safely.”
Leavitt added that President Donald Trump had reviewed the footage and encouraged individuals with information to contact authorities. Last week, Pima County officials noted the home’s doorbell camera was disconnected at 01:47 local time, with the software registering motion at 02:12. At 02:28, the app on Nancy Guthrie’s pacemaker, an implanted cardiac device, disconnected from her phone. Police also confirmed blood found on her porch was hers. Authorities have taken seriously an email containing a ransom note sent to US media outlets.
