Man breaches security at 30 Rock, lunges at ‘Today’ co-host Craig Melvin, official says

Man Breaches Security at 30 Rock in Morning Show Incident

Man breaches security at 30 Rock – A man breaches security at 30 Rock in a dramatic morning incident that left viewers and staff shaken. According to a law enforcement official, the unidentified individual managed to slip past tight security at 30 Rockefeller Center and directly confront “Today” show co-host Craig Melvin. The man allegedly lunged at Melvin and hurled a racial slur during the confrontation before being taken into custody Thursday morning. Officers responded to a report of a disorderly person inside 30 Rockefeller Center at approximately 9:19 a.m., within the confines of the Midtown North Precinct, and placed the individual into custody, according to the NYPD’s Deputy Commissioner of Public Information. No injuries were reported during the incident, and the investigation remains ongoing, the NYPD confirmed.

How the Security Breach Unfolded

CNN has reached out to NBC for additional comment regarding the incident. Investigators believe the man entered through a secured area of the building, where he asked staffers for Al Roker, the law enforcement official said. When he didn’t find the longtime co-host, he turned his attention to Melvin, spotting him a short time later. That’s when the confrontation happened, the official said. Investigators are trying to determine how the man was able to breach the secured area and are combing through surveillance footage, the official said. The man is being held at an NYPD precinct in Midtown Manhattan, the official said.

The timing of the incident is particularly notable, as it occurred during the live broadcast of the “Today” show. Security was stepped up at NBC’s “Today” show in February as Savannah Guthrie’s co-hosts and colleagues covered the abduction of her mother, Nancy, two people at the network said on condition of anonymity. The additional security measures were implemented out of an abundance of caution to help alleviate some of the stress the show’s hosts were feeling as they talked on air every morning about the mystery. Major networks like NBC have security departments that support their hosts — from physical protection to online threat tracking — and liaise with local police.

Broader Context and Security Measures

The incident at 30 Rockefeller Center highlights the ongoing challenges faced by television networks in maintaining security while allowing access for staff and visitors. The building, home to NBC’s headquarters and the “Today” show studios, has implemented various security protocols over the years. These measures include metal detectors, security personnel at multiple entry points, and access control systems that require proper credentials for entry.

Craig Melvin, who has been a co-host on the “Today” show since 2019, is well-known for his work covering politics and breaking news. His presence at the show has been consistent through various security concerns, including the recent incident involving Savannah Guthrie’s mother. The show’s producers and security team work closely to ensure the safety of all on-air talent and staff members.

The NYPD’s Midtown North Precinct, which responded to the incident, is responsible for a significant portion of Manhattan’s midtown area, including Times Square and the Rockefeller Center complex. The precinct has a dedicated team for handling incidents involving public figures and high-profile locations. The investigation into this particular incident is expected to continue as authorities review all available evidence and interview potential witnesses.
