Lineage clarified that it does not own the building or the rooftop solar installation, which was managed by a separate third-party firm. The company also noted that its staff had evacuated the site without injury, and efforts are ongoing to relocate workers to other facilities.

“We know many people living near our facility in Boyle Heights are deeply distraught about the fire that began on June 17, and rightfully so,” Lineage added.

Firefighting Challenges Mount

From the outset, the blaze presented unique challenges for firefighters. The facility’s massive size created obstacles for ground-based operations, prompting the LAFD to deploy helicopters for water drops. “Though not typically used in structure fires due to safety concerns, our air support was critical in reducing the intensity of the flames,” the department explained. However, the fire’s progression was complicated by a suspected ammonia leak, which forced crews to shift from offensive to defensive tactics. Ammonia, commonly used in refrigeration systems, was identified as a potential hazard, but Lineage assured that no harmful concentrations had been detected in the community since the incident began.

As the fire raged, structural integrity became a major concern. “Parts of the collapsed roof are now resting on interior storage racks, creating complex and unstable conditions,” the LAFD reported. This instability required firefighters to adopt a meticulous approach, navigating through the building with caution. Additionally, the heavy use of water to suppress the flames led to wall instability, further complicating operations. “This remains a complex, long-duration incident that will require sustained efforts,” the department noted.

Progress and Persistent Threats

The fire has also raised concerns about the safety of the building’s refrigeration systems. Ammonia, a chemical used to maintain low temperatures, was cited as a possible cause of the flare-up. However, Lineage confirmed that all ammonia was pumped out and transported offsite, eliminating any risk to the surrounding area. “We can confirm that no measurable ammonia concentrations have been recorded in the community since the fire began,” the company stated.
