Balamory is back – Miss Hoolie and PC Plum lift the lid on what to expect

Balamory Returns with New Stories and Original Cast

The beloved children’s television show Balamory is making a comeback this month, bringing back familiar faces from its early 2000s run. Julie Wilson Nimmo, who portrayed Miss Hoolie, recalls how the show’s iconic catchphrase has been a constant in her life for over two decades.

“What’s the story in Balamory?” Wilson Nimmo says. “That question has been on my mind for 20-something years, nearly every day.”

Once a staple of CBeebies, the series revives the charm of its fictional island community, where friends tackled everyday challenges with humor and heart. Andrew Agnew, known for his role as PC Plum, shares his excitement about the new adventures. “It’s a privilege to revisit something we adore,” he remarks.

With the show’s return, the original cast members hope its nostalgic appeal will captivate a new audience. “The timing feels ideal,” Wilson Nimmo explains. “While kids today have access to countless animations, it’s rare to find a show that centers on children interacting with other children on screen.”

Rekindling a Global Legacy

Despite its UK origins, Balamory’s influence stretched far beyond borders, reaching Europe, Australia, Hong Kong, Canada, and South Africa. Wilson Nimmo highlights the show’s universal appeal, recalling a memorable encounter with Australian music group The Wiggles. Agnew adds a humorous anecdote about being recognized in Turkey while in swimwear.

The revival has sparked excitement among fans, many of whom remember the show’s peak when it drew two million weekly viewers in the UK. “It’s like a love letter to the original,” Agnew says, emphasizing the emotional connection the series still holds.

New Characters and Timeless Themes

While the core cast returns, including Penny Pocket and Edie McCredie, the new series introduces fresh faces. Dr Ollie (Carl Spencer) and The Harbourmaster (William Andrews) join the island’s residents. Though actor Miles Jupp, who played Archie the inventor, is absent, his character’s legacy lives on through Ava Potts (Danielle Jam), the latest addition to the creative team.

Agnew teases the addition of new songs, reimagined for modern audiences. “The melodies are refreshed, yet they still carry the same spirit,” he notes. Wilson Nimmo confirms the original tunes remain recognizable, with fans still singing them spontaneously.

Produced by Lion Television Scotland, the revival features two series of ten episodes each, launching on CBeebies on 20 April. Viewers can stream all episodes on BBC iPlayer on the same day.
