Israeli settlers attack journalists, including CNN, on the anniversary of deadly West Bank beating

Journalists Targeted by Settlers During West Bank Anniversary Coverage

Israeli settlers attack journalists including CNN – Israeli authorities have detained four individuals following a confrontation with news crews in the occupied West Bank territory. The incident unfolded on Saturday near the village of Sinjil, located north of Ramallah, where reporters had gathered to document the one-year commemoration of Saif Musallet’s tragic death. The Palestinian-American journalist was fatally beaten by Jewish settlers during a previous year’s events in July 2025.

Confrontation Escalates at Crime Scene

News teams arrived at the location where Musallet suffered his fatal injuries, only to face an immediate and aggressive response from local settlers. Within moments of reaching the site, a group of settlers descended upon the area. As the CNN crew and accompanying journalists attempted to depart, four individuals positioned their vehicle across the roadway, effectively preventing the media vehicles from advancing. These settlers carried wooden and metal rods alongside stones, creating a threatening atmosphere. One individual pulled out a knife and made attempts to puncture the tires belonging to CNN’s transportation. The situation intensified when settlers began jumping onto the vehicle positioned behind CNN’s, which was transporting another group of reporters, ultimately shattering its windshield. A separate contingent of settlers worked to obstruct an alternative exit path while pursuing the journalists toward Sinjil town.

When law enforcement officers and military personnel reached the scene, they identified and arrested four suspects before discovering their vehicle in the vicinity. Authorities recovered clubs and a knife from inside the captured vehicle. In an official statement, police emphasized that both the Israel Police and the Israel Defense Forces take violent incidents and property damage extremely seriously, particularly when they involve media professionals conducting their duties.

Broader Context of Settler Violence

The timing of this incident carries significant weight. Following Musallet’s death in July 2025, United States Ambassador to Israel Mike Huckabee characterized the event as a “criminal and terrorist act,” calling for thorough investigation by authorities. However, Musallet’s father revealed to CNN that no arrests had been made in connection with his son’s death up to that point.

This confrontation with journalists arrives shortly after another notable incident involving American officials. US Representative Ro Khanna was detained by settlers near the village of Turmus Ayya in the West Bank just days prior. This village is home to thousands of Palestinian-Americans who have experienced repeated harassment from settlers in the region. Khanna traveled to the area to demonstrate solidarity with American citizens who expressed to CNN that they feel overlooked by their government.

“I saw the arrogance in the eyes of those settlers, 21- and 22-year-olds with guns, laughing that they had detained us, the arrogance of those young IDF soldiers that my tax dollars are funding, having no respect for the fact that they were detaining Americans, no respect that there was an American congressperson in that bus, and laughing when our translator told them that there are Americans there and the American embassy is concerned,” Khanna told Reuters.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu addressed the growing concerns during an interview with CNN’s Dana Bash on Tuesday. He described the settler violence issue as having “blown up beyond belief” and characterized the perpetrators as approximately 150 “juvenile delinquents.” While acknowledging that police and military forces implement actions against these individuals, Netanyahu noted that Israeli courts remain “very lenient” toward those convicted of settler-related offenses.

Despite these official statements, the West Bank has experienced a notable increase in settler aggression, with some episodes featuring Israeli soldiers standing by without intervention. This surge in violence coincides with the Israeli government’s accelerated expansion of settlements across the territory, creating an increasingly tense environment for both local Palestinians and visiting international observers.
