A 51-year-old taxi driver was taken into custody in Fuengirola, a Costa del Sol resort, following an alleged confrontation with an Irish tourist. The incident reportedly occurred after the passenger was accused of making noise by burping inside the vehicle.
The 65-year-old tourist sustained severe head and facial injuries during the attack, which was described as a violent act where he was ‘punched to the ground.’ He was first transported to a health center in Las Lagunas before being moved to a hospital in Marbella for further treatment.
The victim reportedly hit his head on the curb after being knocked to the ground when the driver struck him in the street, according to witnesses.
While the second passenger involved in the incident remained unharmed, the condition of the assault victim remains uncertain this morning. Authorities have not yet confirmed whether he is still hospitalized or has been discharged.
The arrest was made by National Police officers and paramedics, who were called to the scene after bystanders raised concerns. The driver was later released on bail following an appearance before an investigating judge, though a criminal investigation into the incident continues.
This incident follows a similar case in November last year, where another Fuengirola driver was arrested for allegedly dragging a tourist along the road after an argument over the fare. The tourist, whose nationality was not disclosed, was taken to the same hospital as the current victim.
Details of the prior incident included the driver accelerating and causing the tourist to fall as he lost his grip on a door handle. Both cases highlight tensions between drivers and passengers in the area, though the current incident centers on an alleged act of aggression over a burped sound.
