Max Verstappen’s Temper Flares at Press Conference Over Past Dispute

Dutch Champion Expels Journalist Amid Tense Exchange

During a recent press conference ahead of the Japanese Grand Prix, Max Verstappen confronted a British journalist, Giles Richards of The Guardian, and ordered him to leave the Red Bull hospitality area. The four-time Formula One world champion repeated the instruction three times, stating, “I’m not speaking before he leaves,” before the journalist finally departed.

The altercation stemmed from a previous disagreement in Abu Dhabi last December, the concluding race of the 2025 season. Verstappen had been denied a fifth consecutive title by Lando Norris, finishing just two points behind. Richards had questioned whether Verstappen’s incident with George Russell in Spain, which cost him nine points, was the reason for his title slip.

“You forget about all the other stuff that happened in my season. The only thing you mention is Barcelona. I knew that would come. And you are giving me a stupid grin now. It is part of racing. You live and learn.” – Max Verstappen

Verstappen’s frustration resurfaced when he recognized Richards at the press briefing. The journalist, known for covering multiple races for The Guardian, had previously drawn criticism for his demeanor during their earlier exchange. As Richards began to respond with a skeptical tone, the Dutch driver insisted he exit the room, prompting a brief 30-second confrontation. After leaving, the journalist rolled his eyes, while Verstappen continued to address the remaining reporters for the next ten minutes.
