Saudi Arabia Halts East-West Pipeline Operations After Drone Attack

Activelifezero.com – Saudi Arabia has suspended operations on a major oil pipeline after a drone attack sparked fires and damaged facilities linked to the system, adding a new energy-security concern as the war involving Iran continues to unsettle the Middle East.

The Saudi Ministry of Energy said Friday that the pipeline had been targeted and was taken offline as a precaution. The ministry said Thursday’s attacks caused injuries and that specialist teams were working to protect the infrastructure and determine whether it remained safe to operate.

The East-West Pipeline is especially significant because it provides a route across Saudi Arabia from oil-producing areas toward the Red Sea. US officials familiar with the incident said projectiles struck the Saudi pipeline system on Thursday. Initial assessments indicated that pumping stations positioned alongside the pipeline were hit. It remains uncertain whether the pipeline itself sustained damage or whether the attacks were limited to supporting facilities.

Satellite imagery taken Friday appeared to show broad fire damage at one pumping station. A separate image captured Thursday at another station showed a smaller blaze, with dense black smoke rising from the site. Satellites also detected nine substantial fires close to the East-West Pipeline on Thursday, although at least six appeared to align with flare locations.

Saudi authorities said the pipeline faced multiple attacks and confirmed that people were injured. No timetable was given for a restart, and it was not clear how long repairs or safety checks could take.

Iraq Named as Launch Point

Saudi Arabia’s Foreign Ministry condemned what it described as attacks on the East-West Pipeline in the Riyadh and Madinah regions. The ministry said several drones had arrived from Iraq, causing injuries and damage that was being addressed.

“The attack on the East-West Pipeline in the Riyadh and Madinah regions by several drones coming from Iraq, which resulted in injuries and some damage that is currently being addressed.”

Saudi officials said they would not respond immediately, leaving room for the Iraqi government to take action. Baghdad later condemned the attacks and announced an urgent inquiry aimed at identifying those responsible. Iraqi authorities said the country would not permit its land or airspace to be used as a platform for strikes.

“The Iraqi government condemns the attacks that targeted the brotherly Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and affirms its rejection of any attack that undermines the Kingdom’s security and stability or harms the deep-rooted fraternal relations between the two countries.”

On Saturday, Iraqi security authorities said several borders had been closed as a precaution following recent developments.

Growing Pressure on Saudi Export Routes

The attack comes as Saudi Arabia faces wider threats to its energy infrastructure and export capacity. Iran-backed Houthi forces have captured strategically important positions along the Red Sea, bringing them closer to potential control of the Bab al-Mandeb Strait. That passage is a vital route for global energy shipments and commercial maritime traffic.

The combination of danger to Red Sea shipping routes and damage to a cross-country pipeline highlights the increasingly complex challenge confronting the kingdom. Oil production is only one part of the energy supply chain; crude must also move safely through pipelines, ports and sea lanes before it reaches international buyers.

Oil markets have already reacted sharply to events in the region. Prices rose above $100 per barrel this week amid volatile trading, reflecting concern that conflict could disrupt supply or restrict transport through key chokepoints.

Questions Over Responsibility

Responsibility for the strike had not been definitively established. President Donald Trump, speaking to journalists during a visit to Ireland, said Iran was probably responsible when asked about the shutdown.

“I think they are, probably they are.”

Asked whether he could help secure marine traffic through the Strait of Hormuz in light of the latest concerns, Trump said the situation would resolve successfully.

“Work out fine.”

Iran-aligned militia groups in Iraq have previously used drones against Saudi Arabia, said Behnam Ben Taleblu, senior director of the Iran program at the Foundation for Defense of Democracies. He said such groups may again be used as part of a broader effort to pressure Arab governments over the American military presence in the region.

In late July, Saudi Defense Minister Khalid bin Salman met Trump and Vice President JD Vance in Washington. During those discussions, Saudi officials conveyed their view that Iran could seek leverage through escalation and make use of remaining allied groups, including Iraqi militias and the Houthis.

Saudi Aramco did not provide comment on the attack. The White House and State Department did not immediately respond, while US Central Command declined to comment. For now, the central questions remain the extent of physical damage, the duration of the shutdown and whether further attacks could place Saudi export routes under additional pressure.
