Tributes after British Teenager Dies While Visiting Vietnam

A 19-year-old British woman lost her life in a road accident during her visit to Vietnam, according to local reports. Orla Wates was involved in an incident on the Ha Giang Loop, a mountainous route in northern Vietnam, where she fell from the motorcycle’s rear. She was taken to Hanoi’s Viet Duc Friendship Hospital and passed away on 2 April, with her parents present. Her mother shared with the outlet that the family decided to donate her organs to aid others.

Compassionate Choice for Organ Donation

“Orla was beautiful, independent, and very funny, with a sharp wit. She loved to look good and lived life to the full,” her mother said. “We chose to donate her organs as we believe that if there was a way to give others a chance, this is what Orla would have wanted. Knowing she is living on through them brings us great comfort.”

The Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office expressed solidarity with Orla’s family, stating it was in contact with local authorities and providing support during their “hugely difficult time.” The FCDO highlighted the family’s decision to honor her legacy.

Travel Plans and Southeast Asian Journey

According to Viet Nam News, Orla had been traveling across Southeast Asia prior to starting her degree at Durham University. Her father, Andrew Wates, told the hospital that his daughter cherished Vietnam, making the organ donation “very important” to their family as a way to give back to the region.

Ha Giang Loop and Road Safety in Vietnam

The Ha Giang Loop is a 350-kilometer scenic route through northern Vietnam’s mountainous terrain. Many tour operators recommend riding with a local guide for inexperienced travelers. Vietnam is known for its challenging roads, which claimed over 10,000 lives and injured 16,000 in traffic accidents in 2024.

“In the face of profound grief, her family made a deeply compassionate decision that transcended nationality and race—donating her organs, giving others a chance at life… One journey has come to an end, but her life continues quietly and resiliently in others who have been given a second chance,” said a hospital representative.
