Tories Urge Waitrose to Reinstatement of Worker Dismissed Over Shoplifting Incident

Employee Claims Termination Followed Confrontation With Thief

Walker Smith, a 54-year-old worker, has been dismissed by Waitrose after a brief altercation with a shoplifter. The incident occurred at a store in Clapham Junction, south London, where Smith intervened to stop a customer from stealing Easter eggs. According to Smith, the confrontation happened two days after he had been employed for 17 years, leading to his abrupt termination.

“Staff safety must come first,” said Chris Philp, the shadow home secretary, in a letter to Waitrose. “But dismissing a long-serving employee in these circumstances sends entirely the wrong message. It penalises those who act, while offenders are left unchecked.”

Waitrose Defends Decision, Cites Standard Procedures

Waitrose stated that the case’s reporting “fails to present all the details.” A spokesperson noted, “While we would never be able to discuss an individual case, we can assure you the correct process is being followed, which includes a standard appeals procedure.” The retailer emphasized its commitment to safety, adding that its policies are “very clearly understood and must be strictly followed.”

“We have campaigned for some time for more to be done to protect shop workers from offenders,” the spokesperson said. “Retail crime being made into a specific stand alone offence is one of our priorities.”

Employee’s Account of the Incident

Smith told the Guardian that he regretted his actions but felt compelled to intervene after witnessing thefts at the store “every hour of every day for the last five years.” He described the thief as using a bag to conceal £13 worth of Easter eggs, which led to a short struggle. During the incident, a chocolate egg broke, and Smith tossed a piece “out of frustration” toward shopping trolleys. He later apologised to the manager, but the event was “escalated” by the company.

Political Criticism and Public Reaction

Conservative Party members have accused Waitrose of acting “disgracefully” by sacking Smith, warning that the decision could impact his ability to keep his home. Reform UK leader Nigel Farage echoed this sentiment, tweeting, “We are now a country that favours criminals over law enforcers.”

Waitrose’s Stance on Shoplifting Safety

As part of the John Lewis Partnership, Waitrose reiterated its focus on protecting partners and customers. “The safety and security of our partners and customers couldn’t be more important to us,” the statement read. “We have policies in place to safeguard both, and incidents where staff are hospitalised when challenging shoplifters are not uncommon.” The retailer stressed that “nothing we sell is worth risking lives for.”
