Suspect Dead After Vehicle Ramming Attack on Jewish Synagogue in Michigan

Authorities confirmed that the individual who crashed his car into a prominent Jewish synagogue in West Bloomfield, Michigan, has died. Oakland County Sheriff Mike Bouchard reported the incident occurred during the afternoon of Thursday, with the suspect driving through the doors of Temple Israel before the vehicle caught fire. Security personnel had opened fire as the driver approached, and later confronted him inside the building, according to law enforcement.

The FBI is investigating the event as a “targeted act of violence against the Jewish community,” as stated by Jennifer Runyan, the agency’s special agent in charge of the Detroit office. Bouchard noted that 30 officers were hospitalized due to smoke inhalation as the structure became engulfed in flames. The exact cause of the suspect’s death remains under review, though Bouchard indicated that gunfire may have played a role. “We can’t say what killed him at this point,” he said, while emphasizing that “security did engage the suspect with gunfire.”

“Everything that was supposed to happen, happened,” Bouchard remarked at an earlier briefing. “Security did their job, and then the responders did theirs.”

Temple Israel, a large Reform Jewish congregation established in 1941, also operates a preschool. During the attack, dozens of children were evacuated, with the synagogue later confirming that all students, staff, and security personnel were accounted for and safe. The facility’s Facebook statement highlighted the swift action taken to secure the premises.

Residents like Lisa Stern, a long-time member of the synagogue, described the chaos. She arrived at the temple shortly after the incident, fearing for her friends inside, including two rabbis and a social worker. Stern opted not to text them, worried that a signal might reveal their location. “At first, when they didn’t know, the parents were like falling to the ground,” she recalled, noting the anxiety of families waiting across the street for news about their children.

Bouchard highlighted that the suspect likely had prior knowledge of the temple’s layout, as it is not visible from the road. “They obviously knew where they were going because they knew where to do maximum damage,” Stern added. The synagogue has increased security since the Israel-Hamas war began in October 2023, amid a surge in antisemitic incidents across the U.S.

Following the attack, law enforcement agencies, including the FBI, heightened vigilance at Jewish sites. The Michigan State Police patrolled other synagogues in the state, while major cities across the nation bolstered police presence at Jewish community centers. West Bloomfield, a suburb of Detroit, is home to a significant Jewish population, with approximately 71,000 people in the region, per the latest survey by the Jewish Federation of Metropolitan Detroit.
