Melania Trump’s speech propels Epstein crisis back to forefront

On Thursday, as Melania Trump ascended the White House podium, the stage was set for a presidential address on Iran. Yet, her appearance took an unexpected turn, thrusting the Epstein case back into public focus. The first lady’s opening remarks left the audience stunned, declaring, “The lies linking me with the disgraceful Jeffrey Epstein need to end today.”

Unlike her husband’s high-profile style, Melania had long kept a subdued presence in the spotlight. Her prepared statement outlined her lack of connection to Epstein or his associate Ghislaine Maxwell, stating she was not introduced to her spouse through the financier and was unaware of his crimes. She concluded by urging congressional hearings to give Epstein survivors a platform for their testimonies.

“I think if Melania Trump had done this at the start of the Epstein crisis – a year ago – and called on Congress to put the victims on record and hear their stories, we’d feel quite different about it,” said investigative journalist Vicky Ward, who has covered the case extensively.

Reactions were immediate. Survivors shared their surprise via social media and began organizing responses. A coalition of thirteen individuals, including the family of Virginia Roberts Giuffre, issued a statement criticizing Melania’s remarks as a diversion from accountability. They accused the Trump administration of shielding those in power from scrutiny, citing the Department of Justice’s delayed release of documents under the Epstein Files Transparency Act.

President Donald Trump reportedly had no prior knowledge of his wife’s speech, despite a spokesperson suggesting otherwise. This discrepancy added to the confusion surrounding the timing of her intervention. Marina Lacerda, a 14-year-old survivor detailed in the 2019 federal indictment, called the remarks a “deflection of responsibility,” questioning how they benefited the Trump family.

“It sounds like you’re just trying to shift attention from something to something else. So how does this benefit the Trump family, is my question,” Ms. Lacerda remarked in a separate video shared online.

Meanwhile, some survivors acknowledged the significance of Melania’s stance. Lisa Phillips, a participant in the case, praised the first lady for challenging the Department of Justice’s narrative that the chapter on Epstein was closing. However, she emphasized the need for tangible support, urging Melania to back her words with action.

“What I would do is I would call her bluff and I would, you know, push her a little bit and say, okay, now that you’ve said that, what can you do? What can you do to help us? And what can you do to move us along?” Ms. Phillips said during an interview with BBC Radio 4’s Today programme.
