Man arrested after baby girl dies from dog bite

Following a suspected dog attack, a 45-year-old man was arrested in Redcar after a three-month-old infant passed away. Police arrived at an address on Hardale Grove, Dormanstown, shortly after 13:30 BST on Thursday upon receiving concerns about a child’s safety.

Cleveland Police confirmed that officers removed two dogs from the scene—one found on the street and another at the property. The man was charged with allowing a dog to act dangerously out of control, resulting in a fatal injury. He has been released on conditional bail pending further investigation.

A 31-year-old woman also sustained an arm injury during the incident and was hospitalized for treatment. Both canines were assessed by a specialist officer, who determined they did not belong to any banned breeds. A floral arrangement and a Winnie the Pooh cuddly toy were left at the scene as a gesture of sympathy.

“Our thoughts remain with the child’s family during this sorrowful event. We kindly ask that their privacy be honored in the coming days,” said Ch Supt Rachel Stockdale, head of local policing. She added that a police presence will continue at the address while the inquiry is ongoing.

The force is seeking anyone with information, including potential video footage, to come forward and assist with the case. Updates will be shared through BBC Tees on X, Facebook, Nextdoor, and Instagram.
