Iranian spy ring smashed by British police – amid warnings that conflict in Iran will have ‘immediate repercussions’ with an increased threat of terrorism, violent extremism and cyber attacks

Iranian spy ring dismantled by British police amid heightened fears of Middle East conflict
British authorities have dismantled a suspected Iranian espionage network on Friday, arresting four individuals with ties to Iran and dual British-Iranian heritage. The operation targeted surveillance efforts against Jewish communities and prominent figures, raising alarms about potential threats to national security.
Counter-terrorism units seized the suspects in Harrow, Watford, and Barnet, following months of monitoring their activities. The arrests, conducted shortly after 1am, were linked to intelligence operations aimed at gathering information on synagogues and key members of the Jewish community.
“Today’s counter-terrorism arrests highlight the real and persistent threat posed by hostile Iranian activity on British soil,” said Dr. Alan Mendoza of the Henry Jackson Society. “The Iranian regime has a long track record of using surveillance, intimidation, and proxy networks here to pursue dissidents, Jewish communities, and other targets.”
The operation unfolded as tensions in the Middle East escalated, with US President Donald Trump asserting that Iran could not expect any new agreements. Hours before the arrests, Europol issued a warning that the ongoing conflict in Iran would have “immediate repercussions,” increasing risks of terrorism, violent extremism, and cyber attacks across Europe.
Following the arrests, Jewish leaders emphasized the gravity of the situation, urging security services to remain vigilant. Rabbi Herschel Gluck, president of Shomrim North and East London, noted that the arrests would alleviate fears but warned that the danger posed by such cells could grow exponentially in the current climate.
MI5 has previously highlighted Tehran’s role as a global state sponsor of terrorism, with recent discoveries of 20 assassination and kidnapping plots in Britain underscoring the threat. In response, the Metropolitan Police has bolstered patrols around Jewish neighborhoods, collaborating closely with community leaders to safeguard residents.
Officials cited the cell’s surveillance activities in north London as a critical factor in their decision to expedite the arrests. A resident described the family at the Watford property as reclusive, despite their affluent appearance and ownership of luxury vehicles. Police were observed examining the undercarriage of a car at Finchley, though no weapons or explosives were discovered.
These actions come days after the US and Israel launched strikes against Iran, fueling concerns about the possibility of retaliatory attacks in the UK. The operation marks a significant step in disrupting Iranian plans, though experts stress the need for continued vigilance as the geopolitical situation remains volatile.
