Dogs found crammed in living room ‘doing really well’, says RSPCA

Dogs Found in Overcrowded Home Thriving, RSPCA Reports
The RSPCA shared that nearly 250 canines, recently removed from a cramped UK residence, are currently in good health. These poodle-crossbreeds, identified in January at an unspecified location, had been living in increasingly difficult conditions, the charity noted. Lee Hopgood, the RSPCA’s North of England operations manager, stated during a BBC Breakfast appearance that the animals “are doing really well,” despite initial concerns.
Rescue Efforts and Care
Many of the dogs were discovered in subpar conditions, with some suffering from matted and crusty coats requiring veterinary attention. A total of 87 were directly taken in by the RSPCA, while the rest were transferred to Dogs Trust. According to the trust’s representative, “a significant number of the dogs have since been rehomed successfully and are now living contentedly in their new environments.”
Adoption Highlight
One of the rescued canines, named Boone, was adopted by Dermot Murphy, a former RSPCA inspectorate commissioner. Murphy showcased Boone on BBC Breakfast, highlighting the positive outcome of the rescue. The RSPCA emphasized that Boone’s adoption underscores the potential for recovery and happy futures in such cases.
Contributing Factors
The charity attributed the surge in multi-pet rescues to a combination of mental health challenges, financial pressures, and possibly poor breeding practices. In this particular case, the RSPCA chose not to press charges, citing the owners’ “extremely vulnerable” situation. They also clarified that a widely circulated image—depicting dozens of dogs packed into a living room—was not generated by artificial intelligence, refuting claims of its authenticity.
Broader Context
The RSPCA highlighted that such incidents have risen by 70% in England and Wales since 2021, underscoring a growing trend. Poodle-crossbreeds, or “doodles,” have become increasingly popular, ranking among the top three crossbreeds in the UK, as per a 2025 Dogs Trust survey. In November, the RSPCA reported rescuing 80 dogs, including chihuahuas, pomeranians, and other crossbreeds, from a property in Bedfordshire.
