Artemis II Crew Captures ‘Stunning’ Earth Image from Lunar Orbit

NASA has unveiled the initial high-definition photographs of Earth taken by the Artemis II crew during their journey around the Moon. These visuals were captured by mission commander Reid Wiseman following the completion of a final engine burn that propelled the crew toward their closest celestial neighbor. The image, labeled ‘Hello, World,’ showcases the vast Atlantic Ocean, framed by a faint atmospheric glow as Earth eclipses the Sun, with green auroras visible at both poles.

Earth appears inverted to observers, displaying the western Sahara and Iberian Peninsula on the left, while the eastern portion of South America extends to the right. NASA highlighted the bright planet in the bottom right corner as Venus. The photos were taken after the crew executed a trans-lunar injection burn on Friday morning, which launched the Orion spacecraft out of Earth’s orbit as the four astronauts prepare to traverse over 200,000 miles to reach the Moon.

Historic Mission Marks First Human Journey Beyond Earth’s Orbit Since 1972

Artemis II now follows a looping trajectory that will take the crew around the far side of the Moon and return them to Earth. This marks the first time humans have ventured beyond Earth’s orbit since the Apollo missions in 1972. The crew is expected to pass the Moon’s far side on 6 April and return to Earth on 10 April.

“We are witnessing the dark side of Earth illuminated by the Moon,” said mission specialist Jeremy Hansen, who reported the crew was “glued to the windows” capturing images during the burn.

Wiseman later contacted mission control in Houston to inquire about cleaning the windows, as the astronauts’ excitement for the view had left them obscured. Initially, the commander struggled to photograph Earth from the spacecraft, describing the process as akin to “walking out back at your house to snap a photo of the Moon.” However, the challenge has since been resolved.

Another shot by Wiseman reveals Earth divided by the line separating night and day, known as the terminator. This boundary, where light meets darkness, offers a striking visual of the planet’s dynamic features.
