12-Year-Old Boy Among 6 Dead as Tornadoes Strike Michigan and Oklahoma

On Friday, severe weather claimed six lives across the Midwest, with powerful tornadoes tearing through Michigan and Oklahoma. In the southern part of the state, four fatalities were reported, including a 12-year-old boy. Meanwhile, eastern Oklahoma saw two deaths as storms ravaged the region.

Michigan’s Tornado Devastation

Branch County officials confirmed three deaths and twelve injuries in the Union Lake area near Union City, Michigan, following an apparent tornado. The devastation was so intense that homes were reduced to rubble, and the impact left a trail of destruction. About 50 miles southwest, Cass County reported one fatality and several injuries after a tornado touched down.

“As we’re running, that’s when it hits—skylights start blowing out. You can watch all the doors come off the building,” said Tyler Cramer, a Menards employee in Three Rivers, Michigan.

Cramer described how the tornado struck with alarming speed, causing parts of the store to collapse. “It hit so quickly and was gone,” he added. The storm toppled power lines, scattered debris into trees, and left vehicles completely destroyed. Tornado sirens had already sounded as the storm approached, prompting employees and customers to seek shelter.

Oklahoma’s Storm Impact

Jeff Moore, the Okmulgee County emergency manager, noted that a tornado left a 4-mile path of damage in Beggs, a town approximately 30 miles south of Tulsa. The storm’s aftermath saw large trees felled and power outages reported. Two individuals perished in a house, while two others were hospitalized.

“We’re just getting everywhere as fast as we can, clearing roads as fast as we can,” Moore remarked.

James Hall, a resident in Oklahoma, recounted his experience as he watched the tornado approach from his porch. “I couldn’t hear any sirens and had no choice but to evacuate,” he said, grabbing his children and leaving their home behind.

Weather System Behind the Tornadoes

A meteorologist at the National Weather Service explained that the tornadoes formed due to a weather system pulling moisture from the Gulf and a warm front moving north. This combination created ideal conditions for severe storms, even in a state where tornadoes are uncommon. Michigan typically experiences about 15 tornadoes annually, far fewer than Texas (155) or Kansas (96).

State Response and Recovery Efforts

Gov. Gretchen Whitmer declared a state of emergency for Branch, Cass, and St. Joseph counties, coordinating resources for those affected. “We’re launching an all-hands-on-deck response to severe weather,” she stated, activating the state’s Emergency Operations Center.

Officials in Branch County emphasized ongoing recovery efforts, with drones and cadaver search teams deployed to assess the damage. They aim to wrap up operations by Saturday night, working to clear roads and restore normalcy in the wake of the storms.
