Trump Announces Kristi Noem’s Replacement as DHS Secretary

President Donald Trump has indicated his intent to appoint Oklahoma Senator Markwayne Mullin as the next head of the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), taking over from Kristi Noem, who has faced significant scrutiny. Her dismissal followed a congressional hearing two days prior, during which she faced intense questioning from lawmakers across the political spectrum.

Noem, the former governor of South Dakota, was a strong advocate for Trump’s immigration policies, often referring to the U.S.-Mexico border as a “war zone.” However, her leadership at DHS has drawn criticism for alleged mismanagement of funds and a hardline approach to immigration enforcement. Trump’s decision marks the first Cabinet departure since his second term commenced, signaling a shift in priorities.

DHS, the third-largest federal agency, plays a central role in enforcing Trump’s stringent immigration policies. Mullin is anticipated to assume the role of DHS Secretary by the end of the month, contingent upon Senate confirmation. The appointment comes amid growing pressure on Noem, who had been accused of using taxpayer money for personal promotion and defending ICE’s treatment of detained migrants and citizens.

Noem’s Tenure and Criticisms

Throughout her time in office, Noem oversaw the rescission of temporary protected status for residents of Afghanistan, Haiti, Somalia, Syria, Venezuela, and several other nations, asserting that conditions in these countries were favorable for repatriation. She also faced bipartisan backlash over delayed emergency funding approvals and slow responses to natural disasters under FEMA.

“She looked forward to working with Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth to dismantle cartels that have poured drugs into our nation and killed our children and grandchildren,” Noem stated in a recent message. She emphasized her contributions, claiming DHS achieved “historic accomplishments to make America safe again” and “delivered the most secure border in American history.”

Trump, in his social media statement, acknowledged Noem’s service while assigning her a new role as “Special Envoy for The Shield of the Americas,” a security initiative focusing on the Western Hemisphere. Despite this, he later contradicted her assertion that the funding campaign was approved by him, denying the claim shortly before her removal.

Noem’s tenure included high-profile moments like her appearance at El Salvador’s CECOT prison, where she posed with shirtless inmates to underscore the department’s efforts. Critics labeled this gesture as self-promotion, dubbing her “ICE Barbie.” Her reputation for aggressive immigration enforcement, coupled with the controversies surrounding her leadership, appears to have culminated in her departure from the Cabinet.
