Chalamet thanked by Royal Ballet and Opera boss for boosting ticket sales

Chalamet Acknowledged for Boosting Royal Ballet and Opera Sales
Alex Beard, the leader of the Royal Ballet and Opera, expressed gratitude toward Hollywood actor Timothée Chalamet for increasing ticket sales after his remarks about ballet and opera sparked debate. The actor’s comments in February, during a discussion with Matthew McConaughey at the University of Texas, suggested a declining interest in the art forms, yet they inadvertently generated significant attention.
Controversial Remarks Spark Reaction
Chalamet’s statement, “no-one cares” about ballet or opera anymore, drew criticism from professionals in the performing arts. However, Beard noted that the response was “fantastic” for public engagement. “We simply said ‘Take a look at what we’re doing, mate’” he explained, highlighting the demographic shift in their audience. “Our post got two-and-a-half million engagements and half a million shares, just on Instagram.”
“All respect to all the ballet and opera people out there,” Chalamet quickly added, realizing his words might have been misinterpreted.
Despite initial backlash, some institutions saw the comments as a chance to attract new patrons. The Seattle Opera capitalized on this by launching a tailored campaign for an upcoming Carmen performance. They invited ticket buyers to apply the promo code “TIMOTHEE” for discounts, even humorously extending the offer to Chalamet himself.
Dynamic Pricing Defense
In a broader conversation with The Times, Beard also addressed the RBO’s recent pricing strategy. He clarified that their approach was not “full-on dynamic pricing,” emphasizing that prices remained stable during key booking periods. “There’s a cap on what top-price tickets can rise to,” he said, contrasting it with more aggressive models.
“What we do is not full-on dynamic pricing,” Beard stated. “We don’t change prices at all during the priority-booking period or first couple of weeks of public booking.”
He argued that adjusting upper-tier prices could help maintain lower rates for general audiences, ensuring accessibility. The comments reflected a balance between acknowledging the controversy and leveraging it to draw attention to the RBO’s evolving strategies.
