Seven arrested at base demo accused of supporting banned group

Seven Detained at RAF Base Protest Over Alleged Support for Banned Group
Suffolk Police confirmed the arrest of seven individuals during a peace demonstration at Lakenheath airbase, accusing them of backing the proscribed organisation Palestine Action. The group, which is currently banned, was reportedly linked to the incident following media reports that a US fighter jet downed in Iran had been stationed at the base. The arrests occurred on Sunday as protesters gathered outside the main gate of the base, part of a broader six-day encampment aimed at opposing military actions in the Iran conflict.
Protest Context
The demonstration, which included a continuous vigil, was organized by the Lakenheath Alliance For Peace. According to the alliance, the arrests followed a speech by retired colonel Chris Romberg to the gathered protesters. The event concluded on Monday, but the legal implications of the protest continue. Suffolk Police stated that those detained were held on “suspicion of supporting a proscribed organisation,” and were taken to the Bury St Edmunds Police Investigation Centre for further questioning.
“Suffolk Police has a duty to enforce the law without fear or favour and as it currently stands, not as it might be in the future. As such, where offences are believed to have occurred appropriate action will be taken.”
Legal Background
Despite a High Court ruling in February that declared the proscription of Palestine Action unlawful, the Home Office was granted permission to appeal the decision. This means the ban remains active until the appeal’s resolution. Additionally, two others faced charges of wilful obstruction of the highway after a Saturday blockade at the airbase, as confirmed by Suffolk Police.
