Boy, 14, dies in e-bike crash with car as parents warn ‘this is reason why they are banned from the roads’

Teen killed in collision with Kia Sportage in Chesterfield

A 14-year-old boy lost his life after his electric motorbike collided with a car in Chesterfield, Derbyshire, last Thursday. The incident occurred on Newbold Road around 8:30pm, leaving his 15-year-old pillion passenger injured.

Finley Dawson, the teenager, was hospitalized following the crash but suffered injuries deemed ‘non-survivable.’ He passed away the day after the accident. His friend remains in the hospital in serious but stable condition, grappling with the loss of a close companion.

There is a reason these bikes are banned from the road, and devastatingly Finley has paid the ultimate price in losing his life. His friend has sustained serious injuries and has to come to terms with growing up without his best mate. Although the thrill of riding an electric bike on the road seems exciting, it can also be fatal.

Derbyshire police confirmed the driver of the Kia Sportage is cooperating with investigations but has not been arrested. The families of both boys have issued a statement highlighting the risks associated with electric motorbikes on public roads.

In the UK, individuals must be at least 16 and possess a valid driving license to ride electric motorbikes on roads. However, pedaled electric bikes can be operated by those aged 14 or older, provided their power output does not exceed 250 watts on cycle paths and roads.
